Legal Fiction?

While John 3:16 points us to the explicit love of God for His people, this week in John 3:17 we are pointed to the explicit work of Christ. How is it that we are saved, by Christ, from condemnation? How does Jesus’ work on the cross serve to bring to an actual condemned people an actual pardoning?
