Hesed

But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love, will enter your house.  I will bow down toward your holy temple in the fear of you. Psalm 5:7

In this verse we see the first reference of God’s “steadfast love.”  This will be a frequently used phrase throughout the Psalms, and it is a very important concept for us to understand.  The Hebrew word hesed is what is used here and it almost always is used to reference God’s steadfast or faithful love for His people.

Hate

4 For you are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not dwell with you. 5  The boastful shall not stand before your eyes; you hate all evildoers. Psalm 5:4-5

There is such beauty in what the Psalmist tells us about our God in these verses.  If we are not careful we could read verses like this and think ill of our God.  We can even read verses like this and think that the God we find here in Old Testament changed once Jesus came on the scene.  We can read this and possibly want nothing to do with a God like this. Let me make this very clear right from the start…this is our God if we believe in the God of Scripture.

Abundance

You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound. Psalm 4:7

Most of the Christian’s journey should be consumed with trying to grow our affection for God.  Once we have been brought to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ then our aim is to grow our understanding of the Gospel so that our affection for who God is and what He has done deepens.  It is out of this affection that our ability to obey God, fight sin, faithfully pursue God’s mission in the world, live in Christian community, etc… will grow as well.

Hears

But know that the Lord has set apart the godly for himself; the Lord hears when I call to him.   Psalm 4:3

The Psalmist once again writes something here in Psalm 4 that is easy to run past.  The Psalmist says vary frankly that “the Lord hears when I call to him.”  This seems like one of those very basic truths that we learn when we’re young and our parents or grandparents pray with us.  A truth so simple that a child can understand it.

Slept

I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the Lord sustained me. Psalm 3:5

We have just seen in this song the Psalmist crying out to God because he says “many are his foes.”  The Psalmist is in peril.  The Psalmist is in need.  His natural posture is to cry out to his God for help.  This verse, which immediately follows his crying out is such a beautiful verse for those of us who are Christians.
