Cried

I cried aloud to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy hill. Psalm 3:4

When was the last time your cried out to God?  When was the last time you even thought about possibly crying out to God?  Do you regularly find yourself in a place where this posture would even be appropriate?  If crying out to God is not a regular occurrence then the problem is most likely that we fail to recognize how hopeless our situation is.

Trembling

Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.  Psalm 2:11

Our Psalmist has already told us that God laughs at those who conspire against Him and that God Himself will provide a deliverer for His people (our first direct foreshadowing of Jesus in the Psalms).

Laughs

He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision.  Psalm 2:4

The Psalmist begins Psalm 2 with a frightening thought; the nations are raging and plotting against God and His people.  The Psalmist tells us that the rulers of the earth desire to destroy both God and His “Anointed” people.  Both God and His followers are under attack and the goal is to completely annihilate them.

Delight

2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. Psalm 1:2-3

The Psalmist follows here in verses 2-3 that the delight of the blessed man is found in God’s Law.  I think we can admit that at first glance this seems odd at best and maybe condemning at worst.  Do I delight in God’s Law?  Does it bring me joy?

Blessed

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; Psalm 1:1

This is how the great songbook of the Bible begins. The Psalms bring to us the heights of the mountaintop and the depths of Sheol, they reveal raw emotion in all of its many forms and they come before our God with postures of thanksgiving, praise, frustration and lament.
